Black and Orange Jello Shots: The Classic Halloween Party Tray

Oct 2, 2026

If you only make two colors this Halloween, make them black and orange. It’s the classic costume-party look — high contrast on a tray, easy to batch, and perfect for costume contests, haunted house nights, and October birthdays.

This is the party-tray version: two flavors, one baking sheet, and clean fills with The Jellinator. Same trusted ratio as our Basic Jello Shots recipe — no guessing, no sticky counters.

Orange Orange Vodka Triple sec ~15 shots / box
Black Black cherry Vodka Pomegranate schnapps ~15 shots / box

Tray tip (FAQ): About 30 shots (two small boxes, or one large 6 oz box split across flavors) fits perfectly on a standard baking sheet — easy to slide into the fridge.

Directions

Make each color in its own bowl so the tray stays crisp and distinct.

Step 1: Dissolve

For each batch, pour 1 cup hot water into a bowl. Add the gelatin and stir until completely dissolved.

Step 2: Spike

Stir in ½ cup hard liquor + ½ cup flavored liqueur. Mix thoroughly. Stick to this ratio — too much alcohol can keep gelatin from setting.

Step 3: Fill with The Jellinator

Pour the warm, pourable mix into The Jellinator. Twist on the lid. Press the tip to the bottom of each cup to fill; lift to stop.

  • Capacity: up to ~20 fl oz per fill
  • About 13 standard 1.5 oz shots before you refill
  • Works with hot / pourable jello and standard plastic cups
  • Top-shelf dishwasher safe · Made in USA (St. Louis)

Fill half the cups orange, half black — or alternate as you go for a checkerboard tray.

Step 4: Chill

Cover and refrigerate about 3 to 4 hours until fully set. Overnight is best for firm, party-ready shots (FAQ).

Step 5: Arrange and garnish

On a baking sheet or serving tray, alternate black and orange cups in rows or a checkerboard. Add garnishes right before serving so they stay fresh.

Party-tray presentation ideas

  • Checkerboard — highest visual pop for photos
  • Half-and-half — orange on the left, black on the right, labeled
  • Rim the tray with candy corn or plastic spiders (keep candy out of the shots unless intended as garnish)
  • Make ahead the day before; lids keep texture from going hard or gummy

Scaling the tray

Goal Small (3 oz) boxes Approx. shots*
One baking sheet 2 ~30
Double tray / bigger crew 4 ~60
Big Halloween bash 6 ~90–100**

Per FAQ: 1 small box ≈ 15 shots.

\*FAQ party rule of thumb: 1 fifth vodka + 1 fifth liqueur + 6 small boxes ≈ 90–100 shots. Split liquor across orange (vodka + triple sec) and black (vodka + pomegranate schnapps) shopping lists accordingly.

Why The Jellinator for party trays

Filling a full sheet of cups with a ladle or measuring cup means sticky counters and uneven pours. The Jellinator turns that into press, lift, repeat — so more mix ends up in the cups and you get back to the costume contest faster.

FAQ

Can I use sugar-free gelatin?

Yes. Sugar-free jello works with the Jellinator and the same method (FAQ).

How long do these keep?

Covered and refrigerated, properly stored shots can keep for a month or so (FAQ). Flavor and texture are usually best earlier; for parties, make them 1 day ahead when you can.

Can I transport them?

Yes. Keep lids on. If using a cooler, place cups in sealed bags so meltwater doesn’t sneak in.
