Halloween is our favorite holiday here at Jellinator — and nothing says “party” like a tray full of spooky-colored jello shots. This hub recipe gives you four festive colors (orange, black, purple, and green) using the same proven ratio from our Basic Jello Shots guide: dissolve, mix in alcohol, pour, and chill.
Whether you’re hosting a costume party, haunted house night, or adult trick-or-treat gathering, these colors look great side-by-side on one tray. Pair them with themed garnishes, chill overnight for the cleanest set, and fill cups the mess-free way with The Jellinator.

Why these four colors work
- Orange — classic pumpkin / candy-corn vibes
- Black — haunted-house drama (dark cherry / berry look)
- Purple — monster / witch-brew energy
- Green — slime, witch’s brew, or “toxic” party tray fun
Make one color or all four. Each small (3 oz) box yields about 15 jello shots (2 cups total liquid), per our FAQ. A batch of about 30 shots (two small boxes or one large 6 oz box) fits nicely on a standard baking sheet for easy fridge transport.
The base ratio (every color)
Use this ratio for each flavor below (same structure as our published basic recipe):
- 1 small box (3 oz) flavored gelatin
- 1 cup boiling / hot water
- ½ cup hard liquor
- ½ cup flavored liqueur
- Plastic shot cups (and lids if you’re making ahead)
Yield: about 15 shots per small box.
Set time: about 3 to 4 hours in the refrigerator until fully set; for best results, chill overnight (FAQ).
Orange Halloween jello shots
Bright, classic Halloween color with a citrus punch.
Ingredients
- 1 (3 oz) box orange gelatin
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup vodka
- ½ cup triple sec
Optional garnish
- Thin orange zest strip, or a light dust of edible glitter just before serving
Black Halloween jello shots
Deep, dark party tray color — black cherry reads “black” under party lights and pairs well with orange neighbors.
Ingredients
- 1 (3 oz) box black cherry gelatin
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup vodka
- ½ cup pomegranate schnapps
Optional garnish
- Cherry pie filling spooned on top just before serving (same idea as our Killer Cherry Bomb Halloween recipe)
Purple Halloween jello shots
Spooky grape color that looks right at home next to orange and black.
Ingredients
- 1 (3 oz) box grape gelatin
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup whiskey
- ½ cup vanilla schnapps
Optional garnish
- Gummy eyeball dropped in as the shot begins to set (Monster Mash style)
Green Halloween jello shots
Slime-green and party-ready — lime gelatin keeps the color vivid.
Ingredients
- 1 (3 oz) box lime gelatin
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ cup tequila
- ½ cup triple sec
Optional garnish
- Lime wedge sliver or a gummy worm draped over the rim just before serving
How to make Halloween jello shots (step by step)
Work one color at a time so flavors stay clean.
Step 1: Dissolve the gelatin
Pour 1 cup hot / boiling water into a mixing bowl. Add the gelatin powder and stir continuously until completely dissolved (about 2 minutes).
Step 2: Add the alcohol
Stir in ½ cup hard liquor and ½ cup flavored liqueur until fully combined. Tip: Adding too much alcohol can prevent the gelatin from setting properly — stick to the published ratio.
Step 3: Fill with The Jellinator
Pour the warm, pourable mixture into The Jellinator. Secure the lid. Press the tip firmly to the bottom of each shot cup to fill; lift to stop.
The Jellinator holds up to ~20 fl oz — enough for approximately 13 standard 1.5 oz shots per fill — then refill and keep going. It works with hot / pourable jello and most standard plastic shot cups. Made in the USA (St. Louis).
Step 4: Cover and chill
Cover cups with lids or plastic wrap so shots don’t dry out or pick up fridge flavors. Refrigerate 3 to 4 hours until fully set (overnight is best).
Step 5: Garnish and serve
Add garnishes right before guests arrive. Serve chilled. Arrange orange, black, purple, and green cups in a checkerboard or color-block pattern for maximum Halloween impact.

Yes. Each small box makes about 15 shots. Four boxes ≈ 60 shots — a strong start for a mid-size Halloween gathering. Scale up with the shopping math in our party planning post.
Can I make these ahead?
Yes. Prepare one day in advance, keep covered in the fridge, and garnish just before serving.
Do I need special cups?
The Jellinator works with most standard plastic jello shot cups. Cups with lids are ideal for make-ahead batches and cooler travel.
