Layered Mardi Gras Jello Shots Recipe

Yield: Approximately 36–48 squares (depending on size)

Ingredients

  • 1 (3 oz.) box grape gelatin
  • 1 (3 oz.) box lemon gelatin
  • 1 (3 oz.) box lime gelatin
  • 3 packets Knox® unflavored gelatin
  • 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1½ cups vanilla, cake, or whipped cream-flavored vodka
  • 1½ cups triple sec
  • White frosting
  • Edible gold glitter sprinkles
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Prepare the Baking Dish

Lightly coat a 13 x 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Using a paper towel, wipe away most of the spray, leaving only a very light coating. This helps the finished jello shots release easily without affecting the flavor.

Prepare the Purple Layer

  1. Sprinkle one packet of Knox gelatin over ¼ cup water.
  2. Let it bloom for 1–2 minutes.
  3. Add the grape gelatin and 1 cup boiling water.
  4. Stir until completely dissolved.
  5. Mix in:
    • ⅓ can sweetened condensed milk
    • ½ cup vanilla (or cake/whipped) vodka
    • ½ cup triple sec

Repeat this same process separately for the yellow (lemon) and green (lime) layers.

Allow each mixture to cool slightly before layering.

Assemble the Layers

To create the classic Mardi Gras color pattern:

  1. Pour half of the purple mixture into the prepared pan.
  2. Refrigerate for about 20 minutes, or until the layer is firm but still slightly tacky.
  3. Pour half of the yellow mixture over the purple layer.
  4. Chill for another 20 minutes.
  5. Add half of the green mixture.
  6. Refrigerate again.

Repeat the process in this order:

  • Purple
  • Yellow
  • Green

This creates six beautiful layers inspired by traditional Mardi Gras colors.

After the final layer is added:

  • Cover with plastic wrap.
  • Refrigerate for 2–3 hours, or overnight for best results.

Pro Tip: If any layer chills too long and is no longer tacky, the next layer may not adhere properly. Aim for about 20 minutes between layers.

Decorate & Serve

Once fully chilled:

  1. Gently loosen the edges of the gelatin from the pan.
  2. Invert onto a cutting board.
  3. Cut into even squares.
  4. Arrange on a serving tray or place each square in a decorative cupcake liner.
  5. Pipe a small swirl of white frosting onto each square.
  6. Finish with edible gold glitter sprinkles.

Your Layered Mardi Gras Jello Shots are now ready to steal the show!

Tips for Perfect Layered Jello Shots

For clean, professional-looking layers:

  • Allow each layer to cool slightly before pouring.
  • Keep each layer tacky—not fully hardened—before adding the next.
  • Pour slowly over the back of a spoon to minimize mixing.
  • Chill overnight for the cleanest cuts.
  • Use a sharp knife dipped in warm water between slices.
